Divisions/Offices and Senior Officials with Responsibilities for Agriculture in the Italian State Administration (1861-1943)
Description
This dataset is supplementary material for the article “Agronomists within the State: A Political and Administrative Elite from Liberal Italy to Fascism (1861–1943)”, prepared for a special issue of Historia Agraria. It reconstructs the changing organization of the Italian central state administration in fields connected with agriculture between national unification and the fall of Fascism, with the aim of assessing how the expansion and specialization of public functions created new administrative structures and spaces for technical expertise. The dataset records the ministries involved, their abbreviations, directorates or inspectorates, divisions or offices, the years in which each organizational configuration was active, and the names of the senior officials associated with them. It includes structures located not only within ministries explicitly responsible for agriculture, but also within other ministries whose functions intersected with agricultural policy, such as the Ministry of the Interior. The data were compiled primarily from Linda Giuva and Maria Guercio (eds.), L’amministrazione centrale dall’Unità alla Repubblica. Le strutture e i dirigenti, vol. III, I ministeri economici (Bologna: il Mulino, 1992), and Giovanna Tosatti (ed.), L’amministrazione centrale dall’Unità alla Repubblica. Le strutture e i dirigenti, vol. II, Il ministero dell’interno (Bologna: il Mulino, 1992), supplemented with additional institutional and biographical sources. The dataset can be used to trace institutional reorganization, the multiplication and specialization of administrative functions, and the continuity or turnover of senior officials across different structures and political regimes. The evidence highlights the progressive differentiation of the state apparatus responsible for agriculture, from relatively simple early arrangements to a much more articulated set of directorates, inspectorates, divisions, services, and special offices, especially during the interwar period. The dataset should be interpreted as an institutional reconstruction rather than as a list of individual careers. The years reported refer to the period of activity of the administrative structure or organizational configuration, not necessarily to the full tenure of the official named in the same row. The same official may therefore appear more than once, and similar functions may recur under different institutional names as ministries and internal structures were reorganized over time.
